LOMILOMI MASSAGE
The traditional spiritual Lomilomi I offer is a Hawaiian massage and healing practice known by long, flowing strokes, rhythmic movements and light stretches, using the hands, forearms and elbows. The word Lomilomi is commonly translated as “to knead, rub or soothe.” The massage works with the whole body and is traditionally approached with presence and care.
At the heart of Lomilomi is the philosophy of Aloha, which represents unconditional love, compassion and a deep respect for all beings. Aloha is more than just a greeting; it is a way of being that informs the practitioner’s approach to touch, creating an environment where the receiver can slow down, receive and connect with themselves.
Lomilomi extends beyond physical massage. It brings together touch, breath and intention in a way that honours the connection between body, mind and spirit. As a sacred tradition, it is held with genuine reverence, while recognising that each person’s experience is unique. For some, Lomilomi may simply offer a space to rest and receive; for others, it may invite a deeper sense of connection, awareness or renewal.
Lomilomi is a complementary wellbeing practice and is not intended to replace medical, psychological or other professional healthcare.

What is Lomilomi?
History
The origins of Lomilomi massage trace back to ancient Hawaiʻi, where it was passed down through generations as part of diverse traditions of healing and wellbeing, with approaches varying between families and lineages. In Hawaiian culture, healing was not only physical but deeply spiritual. Lomilomi was seen as a form of holistic care, with a close relationship to the land, the ocean and the natural world.
While massage was commonly shared within ʻohana (families), some people dedicated their lives to learning the deeper layers of the practice under the guidance of a kumu (teacher), carrying this knowledge forward. Pule (prayer) and an understanding of mana (spiritual life force) were also important aspects of this work, and, when needed, other practices such as lāʻau lapaʻau (herbal medicine), hoʻoponopono (making things right), hula (offering through dance), and ʻoli (chants) would also be utilised.
The transmission of Hawaiian knowledge was deeply affected by colonisation from 1778 onwards, as traditional cultural practices and the Hawaiian language came under increasing suppression. Despite these challenges, Hawaiian families, kūpuna (elders), teachers and cultural practitioners protected and preserved their knowledge, allowing practices such as Lomilomi to endure. The Native American Religious Freedom Act of 1978 marked an important step towards greater freedom to practise and share Indigenous traditions.
Today, Lomilomi continues to be practised and taught through a range of Hawaiian lineages. Its continued presence reflects the resilience of Hawaiian culture and the care taken to preserve and share these teachings with respect for their cultural roots.

Benefits
Lomilomi massage offers a range of physical and mental wellbeing benefits. Its rhythmic movements may help relax tight muscles, encourage a sense of ease and promote circulation. It may also encourage healthy digestion and vitality, and can be a gentle, supportive practice during pregnancy.
On a deeper level, the nurturing and flowing nature of the massage can help calm the mind and cultivate clarity and presence. It can also provide a soothing space for those experiencing stress or emotional tension, creating an opportunity to slow down and rest. Some people report feeling lighter, more centred or more at peace after a session, while others may notice emotional or energetic release as the body settles and softens. The experience can unfold naturally and uniquely for each person.
Beyond these benefits, this practice can also foster mindfulness and a sense of spiritual wellbeing. Guided by the philosophy of Aloha, it may invite greater alignment and a deeper connection with oneself and the natural world. Whether you are seeking relaxation, a moment of stillness, or simply time to care for yourself, Lomilomi brings together a holistic approach to self-care.
✧ Make Lomilomi a regular practice ✧
If you’d like to experience the ongoing benefits of Lomilomi, consider making it a regular part of your wellbeing routine. Regular sessions invite you to slow down, release tension and reconnect with your body, leaving you feeling more relaxed, recharged and at ease. Over time, this can become a powerful way to care for your body and wellbeing.
